The Savannah Bananas hosted a Salute the Troops Night at Grayson Stadium, July 8, as the home team took on the Martinsville Mustangs.

Hunter Army Airfield Garrison Commander, Lt. Col. Dwyer was invited to throw out the first pitch, with additional support from the 3rd Infantry Division Band and Color Guard.  In addition, the event provided an opportunity for the Savannah Recruiting Company, Jacksonville Recruiting Battalion to conduct an enlistment ceremony on the field.

"It was a special night to see current, former and future members of the Armed Forces recognized by the Savannah Bananas," said Jeffrey Irving, a Vietnam veteran in attendance.  "It's important for the community to never forget the service and sacrifice of service members ... even at a baseball game."

The event coordinators also recognized audience members.

I was proud to stand when the stadium announcer asked service members and veterans to stand to be recognized," said Ernie Tafoya, a retired Soldier. "The Bananas' games are always enjoyable; to have them salute the military warmed my heart."

As part of the salute, Service Members who attended the game free with free passes, were invited to enjoy all-you-can-eat access to hamburgers, hot-dogs, chicken sandwiches, popcorn, Byrds Cookies, cola and water.

The Savannah Bananas are a collegiate summer baseball team that plays in the Coastal Plain League.  The Coastal Plain League features 16 teams playing in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The stadium itself, located at 1401 East Victory Drive, Savannah; is capable of seating about 4,000 people.  A historic ballpark, it was built in April 1926.  Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb and Jackie Robinson all played in Grayson Stadium.  Up until last year, Grayson Stadium was home to various Major League Baseball Affiliates.
