Learn about accreditation

The accreditation status of a college, university or vocation institution gives you an indication of its general quality.  It means the school has undergone an in-depth review, met certain standards, and is found worthy of approval.  Types of Accreditation: Regional institutional accreditation: if a college or university is regionally accredited, that means the institution has met the accrediting agency’s standards. Most four-year college/universities, public and private and two-year community colleges, are regionally accredited. National institutional accreditation: awarded to primarily private, for-profit schools.

There are fifty-two Delete - Merge Unational accrediting bodies, including the Distance Education and Training Council, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges; the Council on Occupational Education, and the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training.

Specialized accreditation: Sometimes called professional accreditation, applies to a single department or program within an institution of higher education, or it can apply to a school that only provides training in one specific field.  How can you tell if the school you are interested in is accredited by the U.S. Departm ent of Education?  Check the U.S. Department of Education website for a list of recognized accrediting agencies  It is important to find out what role accreditation plays in your field, since it may affect your professional future as well as the quality of your education.
